Storing Your GLP-1: Time Out of the Fridge

The short answer

Yes, these medicines live in the refrigerator. All three are stored between 2°C and 8°C (36°F to 46°F)^1,2,3.

But the question most people are really asking is the other one: how long can it be out? And there the answer is different for every drug.

Fifty-six days, twenty-eight days, twenty-one days. Same shelf in the same refrigerator, three different numbers. If you switch drugs, or if a friend tells you what hers allows, the number does not travel with you.

The one that catches people out

Zepbound's allowance is a total, not a fresh window.

The label says to discard the pen or vial after a total of 21 days at room temperature¹. That means the days add up. Four days out during a trip, then a week out later, then another few days — those all count toward the same 21. It does not reset when you put it back in the fridge.

Wegovy's 28 days is written differently: it applies before the cap is removed². Ozempic's 56 days is counted from first use of the pen³.

These are three different kinds of clock. It is worth reading the one for your own drug rather than assuming.

Freezing ruins it

This is the rule with no flexibility in it.

Do not freeze any of them, and do not use one that has been frozen — even if it has thawed and looks normal^1,2,3. Ozempic and Wegovy both add a specific instruction: do not store it directly against the cooling element at the back of the refrigerator^2,3. That is the coldest spot, and things freeze there without you meaning them to.

Put it in the door or on a middle shelf, not pressed against the back wall.

Light and heat

Keep it in its original carton until you use it. All three labels say to protect the medicine from light, and Zepbound adds heat, with the carton named as the way to do it^1,2,3.

The carton is not packaging you are meant to throw away. It is the light protection.

Practical notes

• A hot car is not room temperature. The upper limit is 30°C (86°F). A car in summer passes that easily, and so does a bag left in the sun.
• Keep the cap on. Ozempic's label says to keep the pen cap on when it is not in use³.
• Take the needle off after each injection. Ozempic's label is explicit: store the pen without a needle attached, and use a new needle each time³.
• Write the date on the carton the first day it leaves the refrigerator for good. It is the only way to count 21 or 28 or 56 days honestly.
• If it looks wrong, do not use it. These solutions should be clear and colorless — Zepbound's may be slightly yellow¹. Anything cloudy or with particles in it goes back to the pharmacy.
